Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) at Lakeridge Dental

At Lakeridge Dental in Brampton, we are committed to ensuring that all our patients have access to quality dental care. One of the ways we achieve this is by supporting our patients through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). The CDCP is a federally funded dental care program designed to make dental care more accessible to Canadians who do not have private dental benefits and have an annual net income of less than $90,000.

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The CDCP offers comprehensive coverage for a variety of dental services, which includes preventive, diagnostic, restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, periodontal, and oral surgery services. This initiative by the Government of Canada aims to reduce financial barriers to oral health care, ensuring that more Canadians can achieve and maintain good oral health.

Who is Eligible for the CDCP?

Eligibility for the CDCP is determined based on the following criteria set by the Government of Canada:

• Individuals who do not have access to dental insurance.
• Those with a family net income of less than $90,000.
• Canadian residents who have filed a tax return in the previous year.

To maintain eligibility, members must re-enrol in the program annually.

Levels of Coverage

The CDCP offers three levels of coverage based on adjusted family net income:

• Tier 1: 100% CDCP fee guide coverage for those with an adjusted family net income under $70,000.
• Tier 2: 60% CDCP fee guide coverage for incomes between $70,000 and $80,000.
• Tier 3: 40% CDCP fee guide coverage for incomes between $80,000 and $90,000.

What is Covered by the CDCP?

From May 2024, the CDCP will cover basic oral health services. More complicated treatments requiring pre-authorization will become available from November 2024. Services covered without pre-authorization include:

• Diagnostic services: Examinations, radiographs, laboratory tests.
• Preventive services: Polishing, scaling, topical fluoride treatments, sealants.
• Restorative services: Restorations on primary and permanent teeth.
• Endodontic services: Standard root canal treatments.
• Prosthodontic services: Standard complete dentures.
• Sedation and General Anesthesia: Minimal sedation procedures.

Services Requiring Pre-authorization

Beginning November 2024, certain services will require pre-authorization, including:

• Specialist examinations
• Interproximal disking of teeth
• Cores and posts
• Crowns
• Complex root canal treatments
• Major surgical procedures
• Orthodontic services (starting in 2025)

Exclusions to CDCP Coverage

Certain procedures are not covered under the CDCP. These exclusions include:

• Veneers in composite or ceramic
• All ¾ crowns
• Teeth whitening
• Inlays/onlays in various materials
• Temporomandibular joint therapy and appliances
• Fixed prosthodontics (bridges)
• Mouthguards
• Crown lengthening
• Root re-sectioning
• Implants and associated procedures
• Bone grafts
• Ridge augmentation

How to Apply for Coverage

Eligible individuals will receive an invitation to apply through mailed instructions. From May 2024, applications can also be made through an online portal. Upon approval, members will receive a welcome package from Sun Life, which includes detailed information about the CDCP, a member card, and their individual coverage start date.
